Out of the box - book
http://www.vimeo.com/11784148Sweet interactive [live] game akin to foursquare launches this Friday for Nike via Wieden & Kennedy.
Nike Grid encourages runners to ‘own’ their postcode or area by running between phone boxes, using them to register their run via their unique code. Participants can earn a collection of different badges [for speed, endurance etc]. The campaign does takes a lot from foursquare - not that that’s a bad thing, i love the idea of foursquare, i can just never remember to check-in.
OK i admit, it doesn’t move the foursquare geo-location game on tons but the addition of having to use [old] phone boxes to register your run is a neat addition/adaptation and it sits really well with Nike’s current strategy.
I love the way that Nike focus directly on the competitive nature of running and embrace it. It’s great to see a brand fight to truly own both the market their in and the consumers that populate it.
‘UVA were commissioned by Virgin Media to create ‘an immersive light installation celebrating 10 years of broadband in the UK’. It comprises a series of laser-based experimental light works which flow through the labyrinthine spaces of the Bargehouse, the four-storey ex-warehouse on London’s South Bank.’

This does what Diesel did last week[ish] and adds 3D - BOOM! Does it make it better? Probably not, but anything that gets me wearing those bad ass glasses legitimately is a good thing. Here.

So you might have seen this about 6 months ago:
http://www.vimeo.com/6223439They’ve now turned it into a live show. Awesome!!! It takes a while to load but it’s worth the wait.
Sweet FREE iPhone app for translating what ever you type, into French, German or Arabic - and the nice touch is it uses your own mouth. Just take a pic of your face, type in the phrase you want translating, hold the phone up to your mouth and let the app do the talking. I would have named it iBabel or something, not iLingual.
Presumably they’ll roll out a bunch of different languages at some point. Download from here.
So Coke have enlisted the help of Springfield finest for their Super Bowl ad showdown. They’ve also extended the reach of the ad by running some nice [not revolutionary however] social media activity alongside.
Users on Facebook can grab a 20 second preview of the ad if they send a friend a Coke ‘gift’. The friend gets a wee coke bottle on their feed and the sender gets a snippet of the ad. The sender also gets to check out the ad a few days prior to it’s airing on the night of the Super Bowl. It’s a nice and relatively unassuming way of getting people to advocate a brand in a social space, not that Coke needs that though - that shits more addictive than crack!
Super Bowl ads ain’t cheap and this is a novel way of making that money have a greater impact. If you’re interested here’s the link to the Facebook page.

As part of the new massive campaign for Guinness [Bring it to Life] there’s an interesting online offering. Bringittolife.tv is a Google Earth mashup worth checking out.

Since writing this back in October [inspired by Touch's work and bloggings] we’re now seeing some attachments come to market for the iPhone that allow you to read RFID tags.
One of the nice things about iCarte is the “iCarteTM has an embedded smart-chip that can be configured as debit, credit, pre-paid and loyalty cards, for secure contactless transactions.”
It makes me fairly certain that the new 4G iPhone in development will contain an RFID reader which will bring it up to par with other manufactures currently packing them.
The possible mass adoption of tech like RFID could bring with it a raft of CREATIVE advertising opportunities. For those who want to play with RFID tags now check out these neat wee USB powered interfaces - there’s even a bunch of Flash libraries to play with.
Get ready because your inner child is about to explode!!! This is truly amazing [if it lives up to the hype]. It’s a small RC micro helicopter controlled via an iPhone app!! The app also includes an Augmented Reality game. The copter is fitted with a tiny camera which feeds the app on your iPhone with a live stream as it fly’s. As you fly the copter around an environment the game in the app populates the area with targets for you to shoot - presumably you’ll have to lay down markers for it to recognise first however. If it all works as well as they say, it’s a great coming together of technologies that could spawn a whole new area for mobiles, gaming and RC toys.
Controlling the copter is also super cool. You simply tilt the iPhone and the micro machine will fly in that direction. Christmas might be a full twelve months away but this just made it to the top of my want list, it’ll take a lot to shift it.
It’s made by these guys.
While quickly flicking through endless American TV while on holiday i saw this. A promotion by M&M’s where you can get any image printed onto the tasty treats and delivered to your door. Now i’m not that narcissistic and while it is a bit cheesy i can’t help finding it kinda cool to get your face of a bunch of M&M’s.
Nice bit of Augmented Reality curtesy of Avatar. Games seem like they could be one of the strongest areas for AR in it’s current state, and this one looks great. The Coke tie in however looks duff - the best thing about it is the aluminum Zero bottle.
Coke’s agency ticking the Augmented Reality box with something unimaginative.
In the spirit of Twitter just being a lot of hot air - here’s a nice live digital piece for the current Sony Ericsson space hopper campaign. Tweet the hash tag #pumpt and one of the hoppers that’s hooked up to the internetz get blown up a bit. Hopefully their going to pile all the fully blown hoppers up for some sort of art installation or summit. Could look cool - and if not the video on the site is fun for 30 seconds of ‘is it live or not’. By Dare
If you’re frustrated about the limited roll out of the Google Voices Beta have no fear! Ribbit Mobiles Beta phase includes the UK, you will still need to get an invite though. Cue the invite begging tweet. BT bought Rabbit last year for a £105 million so it’s positioned really well for the new Voice 2.0 world.
Ribbit Mobile has all the features of its’ Google nemesis - you can route calls to any number you want etc, but unfortunately doesn’t let you assign different actions to differing incoming numbers. Which i’m sure it will eventually have. Oh and there’s an iPhone app on the way as well.
Just noticed that the D&AD entries are online. If you’re interested, here’s the Lucky Balls [Versus Caner] entry I got in for this year.
Esquires new front cover has a rather unsexy AR recognition square on it, and placing the mag in-front of your web cam will make a tiny wee Robert Downey Jr appear. Mini Downey Jr introduces the magazine and the features inside. There are a bunch of similar AR squares inside which do pretty much the same. Which is nice, but again with most AR to date, gimmicky.
It’s interesting to see the market in AR not being occupied more by the Flash plug-in, and Esquire go about it in a weird way. They basically make you download a big video file. It would have been nicer if they’d just kept it in the browser - with Flash [as well as doing something a bit more with the AR tech]. There would have been limitations on it in terms of quality etc, but asking people to download 80+ megs is bit much.
To give it a go you can head over here and download massive file as well as print of a recognition square.
Way back at Flash On The Beach 06 Robert Hodgin [aka Flight404 and part of The Barbarian Group] showed his Magnetosphere piece. It was one of the most amazing pieces for video I’d ever seen - it got me emotional. Now it could have been the massive hangover that prompted this response - but I’d like to think that’s it was just down to the work being unbelievably awesome. Anyways, here’s his latest piece called Solar rework. Again, it’s awesome.
http://www.vimeo.com/7578615Nice video from Nokia showing how they see the next 5 years playing out. Is it just me or does alot of this ‘future functionality’ already exsists in the iPhone/Droid handsets?

“Infractor is an interactive, artistic application that has been developed for a multitouch-table. It is based on the article database of the New York Times.

This is a nice wee app which [almost] works. Just scan a business card and it’ll fill out a new contact with all the details from the card.
Check it out on iTunes here.

OWLE (Optical Widget for Life Enhancement). Really sweet iPhone add on. “OWLE Bubo is a camera mount; stabilizer, repositioned microphone, and 37 mm wide-angle lens built for the iPhone 3GS that improves the quality of mobile video.”
The vid below does look amazing and for only $99!

This post has been sitting in my drafts for a while, then i read a press release by Xerox about their new ink technology. An RFID tag currently costs around $1 to make which has represented the biggest hurdle for the industry in terms of wide spread adoption of the tech. Xerox’s new ink, they claim, will allow the cheap printing of simple electronics. Making the cost of things like RFID plummet - down to 1c for RFID tags. Take a look here for more on the new Xerox ink.
Over on the Apple shaped planet, some peeps believe that the next iPhone to hit yor wallet will have an RFID reader inside it. Apple did patent this tech a while ago - here. With this in mind some clever folks are already playing with RFID readers and iPhones [the new 3.0 SDK for iPhone does allow you to connect peripherals that can use it's API].
This printable electronics breakthrough coupled with the possibility of mobile readers in popular handsets should force the wide adoption of the tech. Now for the paranoid among you this could mean that big brother will know even more about your shopping than you want him to, but on the flip side it will mean there’s a pile of creative opps to be had.
iPhone RFID: object-based media tests
http://www.vimeo.com/4147129If you’re interested the whole area of RFID comes under a broader classificion of Near Field Comms. Take look here for some more info on the subject.
This is a BCI experiment whereby one person uses BCI to transmit a series of digits over the internet to another person whos computer receives the digits and transmits them to the second users through flashing an LED array. The encoded information is extracted from the brain activity of the second user. This shows true brain-to-brain activity. This is done as a proof of concept - to show that B2B *is* possible - which it is, as we show here.
This video is dull, dull, dull. However it does showcase what is an amazing achievement.
Ok, so controlling things through your browser isn’t revolutionary, but it is still cool. Joker Racer is a site originating in Japan that lets you drive a bunch of RC cars [and a train] around the Joker Racer office. It’s predictably crappy if you’re not on a lightening connection. Annoyingly though, they’ve introduced some sort of micro payments system to earn ‘drive credits’ so if you’re looking to just play away - you can’t. Or at least i couldn’t see how to get the credits quickly. If anyone figures out how to get some, drop me a line.

If you want to have a go, here’s their site.
BumpTop 3D [multitouch] desktop ‘enhancment’. I saw an old TED vid from 2007 that initially showcased this piece of tech. Looks like it’s got potential - i’d hate it to be confined to just being a gimmick though and with Surfaces still costing in excess of $10k i fear it might. In it’s current carnation anyway.
It lives here and there’s a video here

Zipcar iPhone app: here. Suddenly apps have gone all ‘year 3000′ on us. Just waiting for that god damn tube technology to kick in!
http://www.vimeo.com/5333123UnitedVisiualArtists - blew my mind. Best quote of FOTB ‘09 - ‘Then i just inserted an organic algorithm…’ - course, i need at least a couple of those inserted every day.

If you couldn’t find any serious reason to buy a Microsoft Surface in the past. £10,000 version of Dungeons and Dragons = money well spent - if your a massive geek with money to burn!! Home of the guys that did it: here
http://www.vimeo.com/7132858Ok so this ended a month ago, but i thought it was still worth a post. London Digital Week is a ‘week of conferences, workshops, meet-ups, presentations, networking, parties and exhibitions bringing together the digital-orientated industries in and around London under one umbrella event.’. Check it out here.
Couldn’t make it down but from the look of some of the videos around it was amazing.

Particularly love the Multitouch sphere by Seeper [their site]. The voronoi fluids app looks so sweet to play with.
